My builder wants to put Sherwin William Semi Transparent Stain on our new log siding because it is cheaper. We are nervous because we have not heard of anyone that has the semitransparent. Only heard good things about their solid stain and we are not interested in that. Thanks for you help.
Not a big fan of the SW semi-trans. It continues to get darker and darker after maintenance coats and you loose the original color. It also seems to get ”chalky” over time. You are correct, their solid color is great and requires very little maintenance, but it looks like paint.
If you are going to use a semi-trans go with Life Line or similar. It requires a clear coat be applied ever 3 years, but you can maintain the color.
Any log home stain is going to require some maintenance every 2-4 years.
