Inheirited a vertical tongue and groove log cabin hand built by ancestors. Previously treated with linseed oil mixture of ? Local treatment person advised deterioration starting on bottom of logs, advised brushing on M-balm and then spray on stain or paint. Some family members want to stay with linseed oil. What is your opinion of this? Structure is over 50 years old.
A definite NO on the Linseed Oil. No on the paint also. Linseed Oil promotes black mold to grow on the logs. You should apply some Shell Guard to the rotted area before using the M-Balm. I would highly recommend installing rain gutters to avoid any more rot to the bottoms of the logs. Vertical logs are the hardest to repair and still look OK.
