You will probably never get the smell out. Unfortunately removal is going to be your best option.

I would recommend hiring a structural engineer to look at it prior to purchase.
If it is caulk that you need I recommend Energy Seal. Rule of thumb is to use caulk on lines that are 3/4” or less. Anything wider you should use true chinking. I like Perma Chink. Call Dave at Timeless Wood Care Products at 800-564-2987 or timelesswoodcare.com to order.
