DO NOT paint the logs. If you want a longer lasting, less maintenance product use a solid color stain like Sherwin Williams Woodscapes. You need to get the loose flaky material off at the very least. I would recommend Osborne brushing it, light wash then two coats of Sikkens Log & Siding

Not sure where to get replacements, but do not use railroad ties since they are treated with creosote which is very bad to breathe. Very high in carcinogens.

You should have the home media blasted (corn cob or glass), Osborne brushed then stained with a good quality latex log home stain. I prefer Life Line from Perma Chink. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for help.
