I personally would not recommend oil based. Most will keep getting darker and darker with each maintenance coat. You should apply a good borate treatment like Shell Guard before staining. Be sure to wait about 2 weeks before staining. The logs should not feel sticky in the morning damp air when they are ready to stain.
