Wash it with Log Wash and apply a solid color stain. It will last for several years and could be corn cob blasted off if it ever were to be restored.

Perma Chink Acrylic Gloss or Satin. You should add extra UV Blocker so the walls will be less likely to fade around wall hangings.
Polyurethane should never be used on logs – inside or out. You may have to sand it all off. You should talk to the dealer where you purchased the product for help.

I would recommend at the very least getting a professional to corn cob blast the old finish off and then you could stain it yourself to help the budget out.
You might want to try experimenting with an area and see what happens. The log wash is a good thing to start with. Perma Chink also makes a mild stripper call PS100 that you might want to try if you get a blotchy look.
You might try putting a light coat of some cedar color stain over it. Test in a spot out of sight.
