It definitely could be mold. You should find a mold expert from the yellow pages and have them look at it. Get references before you hire them.

Sounds like the best way would be to close this area off some how. Creosote may slow them down, but it won’t stop them. It is harmful to them anyway, that is why you can not buy it.

A sanding disc is fine. Be sure to get the swirl marks out as best as possible before staining. We like to use a side grinder with 36 to 80 grit discs.

You could wash them with water and TSP (do not power wash) to remove any dirt and mold and then apply a gray perma chink stain to seal them, but keep the natural gray look.

Do not power wash your log home. You will have black mold problems down the road. We prefer the corn cob blasting since it is a dry process and is ready to stain immediately.

First, silicon should never be applied to a log home. If you are trying to save money do it right the first time and then keep up on the maintenance.A good quality latex stain that is made for log homes should only be used.

If the product that you had put on originaly was oil based you should stick with an oil based stain. I wouldgo with a good quality stain. Try going to Sherwin Williamsand talk with them for more information.

Take a color sample to your local Sherwin Williams and see if they can match it with Woodscapes Stain.
