We built a log 2400sq ft cabin two years ago. It’s safe to say that pretty much every log whether looking at the exterior or interior the chinking has split. Some logs more significantly than others. Is this normal? What type of chinking would you guess it is? Should be contacting the builder for a do-over? We are having a huge fly/stink bug problem within the cabin.
The splitting is normal. The checks (crack, splits) should NOT be filled unless they are allowing wind, water or bugs to get in. You will promote log rot by filling every check. I’m not sure what kind of logs you have. If it is a milled, kit style home it should have been caulked. If it is a larger log, hand crafted style it has true chinking. You can check with your builder. Most states only have the builder liable for 1 to 2 years after completion. It sounds like the caulk/chink needs repairing to me.
