I am rechinking an old log cabin, about 150 years old. I have seen the synthetic chinking and have also seen recipes for making chinking as well. I was wondering which one is actually the best? Someone told me that the synthetic chinking traps moisture behind the chink because it can’t breathe. So which one is best?

The latex is the best. It does not trap moisture, it keeps it out. The old mortstr chinking breaks away from the log and allows water to run in behind it and causes log rot. The mortar does nor put up with the log movement from cold weather to warm weather and causes it to seperate from the log.
