We have a 30 year old log cape-style with horizontal log traversing cathedral ceiling in upstairs portion of house, no rafters. We are re-roofing and the contractor has begun to screw down plywood. We are now noticing existing horizontal checks are growing longer and deeper. Is this a problem and is the contractor making those cracks worse?

Checking (cracks) on interior support logs is pretty common and could be worse because they have been exposed to outside temps right now. Normally it isn’t a concern, but if they continue to get real bad I would recommend a structural engineer look at them. There is a slight chance the screws could be causing it, but the logs would have to be pretty small and the screws pretty big (dia).
