We recently purchased a square pine log home that is 20 yrs old. some of the interior and exterior logs are showing gaps, but not all. with the square style, should i chink or just place a sealent between all the logs. all the pictures i see iwth chink have the round style, but the interior is square. I want to get this solved before it gets worse. I also wanted to know how to get 20 yr old paint off of logs or should i just cover it. Thanks, Steph.
It sounds like you need to do a complete make over of the finish and chinking. If it truly does have paint you need to get it removed by corn cob blasting. I would recommend a borate treatment be applied and then stain with a good quality latex stain made for log homes like Perma Chinks Life Line Ultra 2. Chinking is used in square log homes as well as round logs. It depends on how many breaks and cracks there are, but if over 50% of the running feet of chink are bad you should just have it completely redone. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for more help.
