we are looking to buy a log cabin that was built in 1978 there are some issues with it, there are some gaps between the logs about 1/4” what is the best way to seal the gaps? also there are some small holes bored in the logs, most are the size of a pencil lead and some are about the size of a pencil. what can we do to take care of, this if any?

It sounds like you need to strip this log home of its finish and apply a borate treatment for the wood boring bugs. The exterior should also be caulked/chinked to fill the gapes and help seal the house. A new stain then needs to be applied. Plan on budgeting $1,500 to $2,000 per year for maintenance.
