Great site. What is the best solution to avoid (or limit) log shrinkage and its impact on water/air/insect penetration? Is there a way for builders to ”certify or warrant” the moisture content of logs? Should I avoid milled wood that is not dry? What percent moisture should I avoid? Other ideas?

Best way to avoid shrinkage and resin bleed is to make sure that the logs have dried naturally for a year or more. Kiln dried logs will dry to the 15% moisture that is best, but will draw moisture from the air after being remove from the kiln. Even if kiln dried they should sit for a awhile before being used for construction.
