we have a log cabin built in the early 50’s Between the logs burlap and small logs were used. We have found 2 rotten logs on the north side around the fireplace. Should we remove all the original burlap material between the logs and use some chinking or caulking? We want to maintain the original look of the cabin.

You may be able to chink right on top of the existing burlap. As for the log rot, you need to have that taken care of right away since it is only going to get worse and spread to other logs close by.
