Will borate keep wasps and bumble bees away from a log home, as well as all the other types of bugs ? If I apply borate to a new log home before staining and clear coating, is it totally bug proof for many many years ? Someone told me they used borate, but it only helped for a couple years and then the bugs and woodpeckers drove him nuts and he sold his log home and said he would never have another one, although he loved the homeyness and atmosphere very much. Thanks for any help and advice.
Borate will not help with bees and hornets. Borate only works on bugs that digest wood fiber. It also helps stop log rot which is the big advantage of this product. It will last for 10 or more years depending on which product that you use.Shell guard is one of the best in my opinion, but there is a 2 week dry time before staining. There is an additive that can be put in the top coat of your stain or finish that will kill bugs on contact. The secret to this that you have to wash the dust and dirt off from the house a couple of times a year so that there is still that contact to the bug with the finish. I would recommend that you hire an exterminator to help stop the spider and bee situation.
