I own a 50+ year old log cabin that was originally chinked with oakum. I am preparing to chink the interior. In a number of places the oakum has come out of the log spaces, but in many places it is solidly in place. Can I apply chinking (Weatherall or Permachink) directly over the oakum, or must it be removed and replaced with a modern backer rod of some sort? Thanks for your help.
