We are considering the purchase of a log home built in the 80’s, however, I dislike the closed in feel of the main floor. Can we cut through interior log walls without affecting the structural integrity of the home (the logs are greater than 1 ft in diameter)? Can we expand existing openings? What is the best way of ”modernizing” a traditional log home?

You probably can, but you should really have a structural engineer look at it to say for sure. Most lumber & steal yards have one on staff.
