Just purchased log home built in 1980. Not much maintenance done in at least 10-15 years. How can we tell if the interior logs have been varnished or stained in the past? Also, what is the best suggestion for caulking between the logs many gaps where sunlight comes in. Thank you.

Any good paint store should be able to tell you if it is stain or varnish with a sample.
You should have the exterior caulked completely for the daylight situation. You may want to consider doing the interior also. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for more help.
