I dont suggest filling all the checks, cracks. The ones that face upward and leed into a door or window should be filled. Otherwise they will funnel water into the jambs. Let the log breath.
I do suggest mixing up a concentrated solution of Borate and apply this into the checks, using a plastic bottle with nozzle works good.
AS for the stain, We’ve used many brands over the years. None are fool proof for ever. I now use the products that www.timelesswoodcare.com sells, they work great.
