we need some information on humidifying our log home: is it necessary and is cold air humidifiers the best, do we need to keep them on year round? What are the benefits? Thanks very much.

You should keep the humidity in a log home the same as a standard home. I would think that warm air humidifiers are going to work the best for you. Have a high end humidifier installed right on your furnace if you have forced air heat. You should try to keep it at 50% plus.
