Deterring squirrels and woodpeckers from chewing on a log home: Prevention methods and deterrents

Shoot them. The squirrels are probably chewing because of the borate in the wood. The woodpeckers are after bugs in the wood. Fresh stain will stop them for awhile. A suet cake feeder away from the house may deter the woodpeckers some.
