We just moved into a home that was built in 1981, there are large log beams around the entire ceiling. We can hear them cracking and can now see obviously cracks in each beam. Is there something we can seal the beams with to help with this issue? and what is the optimal humidity for home?

This is very typical for a log home, especially this time of the year and the extreme cold weather that we have been having. Normally it is not a concern. Call 800-564-2987 for products to apply to beams, but it probably will not stop this. There really isn’t any standards for humidity in a log home, but whatever you can do to keep it above 50%-60% this time of the year the better for you and the home.
