I have a 5 year old, 3 story building with 20 inch logs. Some of the lower logs on the south side are showing some significat checking, as wide as 4 or 5 feet. There appears to be some rot inside. I want to treat the wood and chink. Should I do anything about the rot first and what type of products are best for that , for the treatment and for the chinking? I would appreciate any advice, especially having to do with the rot.
Mike,
First off I would recommend that you not fill the checks. Ifyou fill them with caulk it will still separate from the wood and allow water to get behind and cause further log rot. I would recommend that you get some shellguard made from Perma Chink and put it in a squeeze bottle such as a ketchup bottle and squeezeit into the checks once a year. WE only recommend filling checks that allow wind or water into the home. To buy the Shellguard call Timeless Wood Care Products at 800-564-2987.
