As for wood rot resistance – from best to worst (my opinion) – Cedar, Oak, Pine.
You are going to pay a high premium for Oak, and it is hard to work with since it is so dense. Cedar will cost more than the Pine, but the rot resistance is considerably higher. Pine will be the least expensive, easiest to repair. Pine is probably used in 90% of log homes and works just fine with proper maintenance. They allneed to have the finish maintained.
