OIL BASE VS WATER BASE STAINS. I have been trying to decide which is the best approach to take with staining my home. The providers of each of the different products all say they have the best product. What is your experience. Which product is best to keep a house looking good the longest, and best a protecting the logs.
My opinion is to use latex (water based). Almost all products are latex based for log homes now. You will get a better chemical bond between these products if you stick with latex. Perma Chink Life Line stains are my favorite. The key to all of these stains, latex or oil, is to keep up with the manufactures recommended maintenance. Perma Chink recommends a wash and recoat of the clear Advance Topcoat every 3 years.I recommend that you budget about $1 per square foot of your house for maintenance per year for a professional to do it.
