the logs on the inside of my 12 year have never been varnished or anything.what do I do about this

You should sand them clean and then apply a light stain and clear coat. I would also recommend putting some extra UV blocker in the stain to help stop wall hangings making marks on the wall over time. Life Line interior is a good choice.
