In my opinion, no. There are different schools of thought on this one.
Fill the holes with Energy Seal. Be sure to inspect them 2-3 times per year for failure. Call Timeless Wood Care at 800-564-2987 to get Energy Seal.
I would think so if you have a way to hold them there until the glue dries. Liquid Nails might work.

It will need to be corn or glass blasted. Sometimes it needs to be ground after the blasting to remove any remaining Rawhide. Nasty stuff!
Forest Green would look good, but do not use paint. Use a solid color latex stain like Sherwin Williams Woodscapes.
Most 1/2 logs will have a mill glaze. A light sanding would be the best way. 50 or 60 grit. You do not want to get it too smooth or you are defeating the purpose. We like to use Perma Chink Life Line Ultra 2 Stain
