I would number it and dismantle it, replacing the rotten ones when being re-constructed.

That would work fine. All of the new ”kit style” log homes cut the logs flat on top and bottom and it works well. The key to any style log home is keeping up on the maintenance of the finish and chinking.

NEVER use paint on a log home. You could chink it from the outside. Use Perma Chink and Grip Strip backer and then solid stain instead of paint. looks like paint, but acts like stain. Call Timeless Wood Care at 800-564-2987 for help and the materials you will need.
