You should try using ground corn cob, I think it will work better and give you a nicer finish.

The humidity usually does not affect the corn cob grit. I’m not sure what ”mildewcide” you are referring to, but you should definitely put a borate treatment on like Shell Guard. Yes, they are still around. I have had some customers that have tried the new Behr product and said that it has held up quit well. As with any finish, the proper method of application goes a long way in helping it last.

The rough finish is not a bad thing. It actually gives the finish more to adhere to and could last longer if the maintenance is kept up. The appearance is not always appealing and can be eliminated by sanding, but the sanding process is pricey.
