I would try something different next time. Sherwin Williams DeckScapes is a good product.

Do not use white foam board. It gives off formaldehyde gas and will cause the chink to bubble. Use pink fiber glass if you must. The dead air space is a good insulator as it is.

There is no good way to deal with the spikes. You should number each log in order and then re-assemble in reverse. take lots of pictures.
