Purchased 10 year old home 2 weeks ago. The home is in UT where there is snow covering the railings several months of the year. Log railing around the deck has some beatle activity and most rails are splitting due to weather conditions. How should we preserve and or repair these posts & railings? Should the cracks be filled/sealed to prevent further penetration of water? What sort of filler should be used? The previous owner said to stain every 2-4 years. Doesn’t look like that was enough
