we are thinking of using 2” x 12” x 16 ruff cut dried cedar planks for exterior siding on our MN cabin in the woods, we saw this with 1” chinking between the planks, but wondering how to install this properly, best stain,chinking,wrap, maintenace problems?

You definitely want a vapor barrier behind it. Once installed you can stain it then let it settle in for a month or so before chinking so that it dries. Otherwise you probably get a lot of chink pulls from it drying and shrinking pulling the chink loose. I recommend Perma Chink Ultra 2 stain and chink. Keep up on the maintenance with any stain you use!
