WHY IS THE #1 NO NO IN THE PERMA CHINK CATALOG , I recieved today?? On page 32 and 33 they offer two products to be used outside as a finsih remover, you apply, the remove
with a PRESURE WASHER!!!!They clearly state this. Now is this a new safeway to do this?, If I call them, they will say yes, its their product, you tell me is this a safe way to do this on my log home!!!!!!!!!!!
It is still my opinion that this should not be done to a log home. I have debated this with Perma Chink reps many times, but they say that they need to offer it for the do it yourselfer. The problem is that the do it yourselfer will end up spending more money over time fixing the mess they made.Black mold and peeling will occur over time if not allowed to dry properly.Long hair like fibers are also raised if power washed too hard. If you must power wash, allow it to dry for 6-8 weeks before staining. You will need to give it a LIGHT wash with Log Wash to remove any molds or dirt that may have settled on the wood and allowed to dry 2-3 days before staining. I also recommend not using oil based stains if you must power wash. It is just makes sense that wood and water do not make good partners.
Perma chink also offers Check Mate to fill cracks or ”checks” in the logs. My experience is that 90% of log home owners will not inspect their homes and end up causing log rot from filling them. The only checks that should be filled are the larger ones that run into a door, window or corner and allow wind, water or bugs to enter the interior of the home. They must be inspected for failure at least twice a year.
