someone told me to spray Transmission fluid on exterior to stain and preserve logs. What do you suggest?

Do not do it! Will leach into drinking water over time off from house. You could become liable for oil spill. It can also cause toxic fumes inside of cabin. Buy some good quality log home stain and maintain it.
