If it is mold you will have to sand and restain if possible. If it is Carpenter Bees, they will travel several feet down the walls in any direction. They could have built a nest and it could be leaking through the wood.

You will probably have to corn blast it and start over.

Not having used walnut shells, I cannot say for sure if it is bad or good. It has a lot to do with the grit rating. I would stick with the corn cob 20/40 grit.
Try 1 cup TSP to 4 gallons warm water and wash. Rinse with clean water. If this does not work you might want to try some P-100 from Perma Chink.

You can try it, but my experience with the O brush is it does not remove enough to do a good job. Experiment.
Sand blasting. You might have to sand to finish removing any Rawhide product left after blasting. Be sure to cover everything when sand blasting. It will etch glass, cut wires and remove finishes on drip edge and window frames.
We like to use 20-40. no pressure setting but you need 185 CFM.
