Not much, other than having the logs replaced with a half log system.

The least expensive way to do it would be to stain it with a solid color stain that is darker. I like to use Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Solid Latex.

Have them corn cob blasted, borate treated and stained with Perma Chink Ultra 2 stain.

Corn cob blasting is the best way to strip in my opinion. You can stain immediately. You should try sanding the stain on the interior, but if it is very old you my never get it out completly.

Not sure what you mean by ”pulp wood”, but most any wood is ok, some are more susceptible to rot. The softer the wood grain the more maintenance you will have to battle log rot.
