This is a tough one for do it yourselfer’s. If it is not fixed right you may have more damage and costs in the future. Geta home equity loan and do it right the first time.

You are going to have to run a cable between the two walls and tie them together. You can then hide the cable inside of a fake beam.
If you want to replace your windows I would recommend staying with the wood frame. Anderson makes a real nice window that would look good in a log home.
You may want to put some slip joints in the face of the plywood that you attach to the logs. Also it is imperative that it is sealed properly so that water cannot leak down in behind to start causing rot issues.
You should contact Jim Barna Log homes and have a representative inspect it for structural soundness. It may have to be replaced. Most of the time this cracking (checking) is common in log homes and is not as bad as it appears.
Yes, youcan apply Energy Seal Caulk or Perma Chink to the exterior lines and corners to help seal the home. You may want to apply a log end sealer also. It would be ashame to have to cover the logs with siding. Go to www.permachink.com for more help.
