Do not getto alarmed. They are probably Powder Post Beetles. The house will not fall down. Unfortunatly, the best way to get ride of them is to apply a borate treatment, but it must be done on bare wood which means stripping.

You should contact a local exterminator for a second opinion.

It should be cleaned first. As for the chinking or staining first it depends on your taste. The chink will not be so stark if you stain ontop of it.
Spraying is fine, but based on what you have said it sounds like you have some log rot going on. Carpenter ants are only around when there is wet, rotten wood. Call ryan at 877-788-5647 for log rot help.

I like to use the Perma Chink products. There is an additive that you can put in the stain for bugs. It will not give you much control for carpenter bees. It also works best when the logs are clean so they need to be washed a couple of times… Read More »Archive-7974
Normally these bugs do not hurt the logs structurally, but they are a nuisance. The house should be corn cob blasted and have a borate treatment applied and then stained again. Call Mike at 866-670-3020 for help with the cost of this project.
Not sure of a spray, but I would recommend caulking or chinking the exterior completely to stop them from getting into the interior for the winter to build nests.
