It would be best to put a clear latex stain on it. It could split either way if not dried properly before used.

You need to caulk the exterior first. If there are any water leaks you want to make sure you have them stopped before you attempt to caulk the interior. It is best if the interior logs have a finish on them. It makes it easier to wipe clean and protects from dust getting into the wood fiber and darkening the logs. They should be sanded or Osborne brushed first. I recommend life Line Interior stain. Call Dave at 800-564-2987… Read More »Archive-8336
Sounds like you do have a mildew problem. You should increase ventilation with an exhaust fan. As for getting the black out of the logs you will probably have to sand them back to clean wood, if possible, and re-finish.
I would recommend putting some sort of color on it, or you will not make it 2 years and have to do it again. Go to this link for some colors that are pretty natural looking. Be sure to use the clear topcoat if you use this stain. http://www.permachink.com/vmchk/lifeline-ultra-2.html
