Doug Fir will always turn dark. All wood does, Doug Fir just does it more and quickly. It sounds like you have Powder Post Beetle and it should be stripped to bare wood and have a good Borate solution applied.

It probably needs more than just a washing if it has sat that long. Corn cob blasted then Osborne brushed followed by a borate treatment. DO NOT use bleach. Call Dave at Timeless Wood Care Products for help and other suggestions on what to use. Stay away from the oils.… Read More »Archive-8304

I would recommend leaving it as is for the new owner to decide. Most people do not want painted logs

You should try to contact someone that does foundations and see if they can help. If the wood was dry around the bottom I would say run a large bead of chink around it to seal.
You may try caulking a thin layer around the edge of the knot.
