Inside could be mold or mildew. Contact a mold remediation company to investigate. Outside…not sure. If there is a fresh finish on it it shouldn’t be smelling at all.

That stuff is tough. It almost always turns black. Glass or sand blasting is the best. Grinding would be a last resort, but you better have hundreds of disc’s.

On the interior it is really up to you. Putting a clear sealer on them will help stop dust and dirt from getting into the wood fiber.

Yes, you could mix the species, but they may take the stain differently. You could stain with a solid color to avoid this problem, and it will hold up better for you in Florida. They will need to be pretty straight to use for cabin poles.
