The only good way to remove it is to have it corn cob blasted. You will more than likely not have to worry about left on old stain. Power washing is not good for the logs. We like to use Perma Chink Ultra 2 stain.
We normally just run about a 1/4” bead over the butt joint and trowel it out. You could cut a ‘v’ grove, but it is not necessary.
Really, not any thing different from a pine log.

You should borate treat the logs before staining. Oak is fine for a log home. We have worked on several of them. It is very hard though, and can be a challange to work with. Be sure to allow them to dry properly before staining.
You will not get rid of the wood ants unless all of the rot is removed. Be sure to apply a borate before installing new logs. Call Ryan at 877-788-5647 for help.

The oak is probably a little less susceptible to rot than the pine or spruce. The cost of oak would probably be twice as much. All wood must be maintained to avoid rot. Be sure that the builder applies a borate treatment before staining.
