You should stick with some sort of oil based product. I usually do not recommend putting a different product over something else.
The borate treatment is not going to hurt. Cedar can rot in extreme conditions. I always recommend latex stains made for logs homes to put up with the drastic movement.
I recommend staying away from all oils. Latex log home stain is the best way to go. Most log home products today are acrylic latex based and bond well together. Some oil products can cause blackening of the wood, like linseed oil.

The best way will be to strip it by sanding with a palm sander using 40 grit paper.
CWF isnot vey desirable for a log home. You should have it corn cob blasted first and then use Perma Chink Ultra 2 stain is my choice. You will need to maintain the clear coat every 3-4 years.
