You will have to inspect them 2-3 times per year for failure and repair. It only takes a little hairline seperation to cause trouble.

Are you sure it is a humidifier? I could see a DE-humidifier doing this since it takes the moisture outof the air. If it truly is a humidifier, I cannot explain.

You should contact the manufacturer of your log home on how tight. If there are that many gaps you may want to consider having the exterior completely caulked or chinked.

Mortar will not seal the logs properly and will cause rot over time. The latex chinking will never get hard like mortar and stretch with the movement of the logs.
