I would recommend Perma Chink. It has a clear coat that is applied over the stain to protect it every 3 years and does not darkenwith each application like Woodguard.

I would not recommend staining the back side, and it is less costly to stain the first year since you will have to clean the logs if you wait. Log Wash and Wood Renewfrom Perma Chink willhelp clean them if you do wait.
