You should wash it with Perma Chink Log Wash. you can call 800-564-2987 to order some. A little goes a long way. As for the splitting and cracking–???. You may have to replace that portion of the siding.

They are only there because there is wet or rotten wood. You should call a local exterminator and see if he can find the cause.
