Paint is a big no no on log homes. It needs to be removed and have a good quality log home stain applied. LifeLine or Capture/Cascade are both good choices.
cut the ends back so that they are 2 or 3 inches in from the drip line of the roof.

You might want to try a wood brightener like Wood ReNew. Call Dave at 800-564-2987 for a sample to try. He may have another suggestion also.

That’s what I would recommend.
I would recommend stripping the logs of the Woodguard before applying Sikkens. I do not know of anything that you can put over it.
The gloss will hold up better.
