It will require the same maintenance as a log home. I recommend using Perma Chink Ultra 2 stain and clear coat. It requires a light bath and clear coat every 3 years. The other low maintenance choice is a solid color stain. Sherwin Williams Woodscapes latex is very good.

You could try it, but the wood will continue to change. Best way is to sand all of the walls to clean them up and then apply a light color stain and clear coat with an added UV blocker so it will slow this process.
