You need to use some sort of stain with color (pigment). If you just use clear you will be redoing it in a couple of years at most. Life Line by Perma Chink is a good choice.

Do not fill the cracks! It will seal in the moisture and speed up the rotting. Get them replaced.

If you are trying to get back to new wood use a side grinder with 36 grit. If you just want to smooth use a palm sander with 50 grit. Use the best brush money can buy.
