Shouldn’t be a allergy problem. It sounds like resin bleed and there isn’t much you can do about it.

Sounds like it needs a fresh coat of clear stain applied if it is coming off with washing. If not, wash with Murphy Oil Soap. Just be aware that you will not be able to apply any stain after using Murphy’s. It would have to be sanded.

I wouldn’t mess with them. They should be fine, but if you still have concerns you should have a structural engineer look at them.

It should at least have a clear stain applied to seal it from dust and dirt.
